The heart drives the circulation by pumping blood around. It does by switching between two states: Systolic (heart muscles contracted) and Diastolic (heart muscles relaxed). All other physiological data follow from this basic mechanism. It is NOT so that the heart works by exerting a stroke volume (SV) - that follows from the above mechanism. The other data in this system are volumes, pressures, resistances and compliancies.
